LIGHT SKIN VS. DARK SKIN By: Krysten Smith
My questions: Is there a issue with being light skin or dark skin in the African American community? Why is it a issue about being light or dark skin? How did this issue come about? Is this issue still going on in the present day?
Project: I did my project over light skin vs. dark skin within the dark community. I read Don't Play in The Sun and The Color Complex. Both these books explained to me about the issue black people have with each other about being light or dark skin.

I believe that this is very important in the world
today. Most people do not know about this issue we have in the black community
and it’s good to address it so most people will become more familiar with it. Also, it’s important to know that black people went through
discrimination before and yet, it’s happening among our own kind. Being black American I realize that there is a feud among the blacks about color complex. So being an African
American like myself, I wanted to know why this problem is going on within the
community. Light skin or dark skin we all still have African ancestry in us so
it should not matter if you are light brown or dark brown. Through the books I
read, I truly wanted to understand why it matters what shade of black you
are and the problems that it is stirring up today.
In Early life, "white communities did not consider black beautiful" (Golden, 22). This all started around slavery. Light skin blacks were called house slaves. They usually did jobs like cooking, cleaning, serving meals and caring for children. Dark skinned blacks were called Field Negroes who worked on the fields doing things like farming and picking cotton.
